Exhibition Statement
by Onawa Gilkes, curator at Harlow Gallery
Urban/Landscape brings together images of common spaces; observed, lived, and obtained by constant use and inhabitation. The exhibition observes the evolution of everyday spaces into sites of exploration and commemoration. Jake Baglin’s exploration of landscape tradition within urban terrain by the trees of Separation Street along with Jon Hewitt’s biblically esoteric renderings of sky-scapes situate the exhibition in the tradition of landscape painting.
Nerrida Parfitt’s surrealist portraits of domestic landscapes warped by uncanny compositions and Peter Tankey’s painterly urban scenes invoke the presence of the people who inhabit these spaces and the people who are painting them. Jeremy Fiske’s brightly coloured scenes of psychological horror brings landscape inward with falling planes, sinking boats, and gas masks along with instillations of furniture and upholstery bringing these scenes off of the wall and into the interactive space.
Together these works form their own landscape within the gallery space, moving through skies, cities, small town homes, impressions of trees seen on daily walks and the subconscious impressions made on and by these spaces.
List of Artists
Jon Hewitt
Jon Hewitt is a painter based in Melbourne. Having studied art a long time ago he's only recently returned to painting following a serious illness. He's exhibited widely across Melbourne and a bit overseas. In 2026 he will undertake a residency at Similkameen Artist Residency in Canada. When he's not painting, he's writing a book about living with chronic fatigue, walking the dog, watching sport or the news, listening to podcasts about sport and politics and reading books about politics, sport and fantasy worlds. He's an ok cook, bald and the son of a preacher man.

Jeremy Fiske
Jeremy keeps himself busy. Alongside painting he has recently taken to learning the ins and outs of upholstery and looks forward to exploring the intersections between 'trade' and 'art'.
This series of Nursery Wall Nightmare paintings tethers innocence to loss.
By using a child friendly palette and simplified forms he creates a deceptively safe place which dissolves when the horror of the subject matter becomes apparent. The events depicted, whether looming, in the moment or the aftermath, highlight the comeuppance of our hubris, something every child learns sooner or later.

Ziklag is a city in the bible that David sought refuge in to protect himself from Saul. Ziklag is also today a secretive invitation-only foundation for wealthy, conservative Christian donors aiming to influence American culture and politics. Their aim is focussed on implementing a "Biblical worldview" across seven spheres of public life including government, education and media. Internal documents revealed that for the 2024 elections, Ziklag structured it’s activities into three main pillars:
Steeplechase: Utilizing churches to mobilize conservative voters
Watchtower: Rallying voters around opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, specifically transgender rights.
Checkmate: Funding "election integrity" groups to challenge voter eligibility in key battleground states.
