Exhibition Statement

The focus of my work is about time and memory, how memories run, bleed, drip and join, shifting with time and experience. Memories of the past inform and influence your future. Working as a funeral celebrant forced me to focus on what you do with your time.

Colour is another focus of my works, rendering them tactile and fluid. The vividness and luminosity invoke the emotional complexity and mystery of the subject, not the mere physicality. I approach each brush stroke as controlled Kaos and considered mayhem, the underpainting free and loose with little conscious thought when flinging the paint down to capture a moment soon to be lost to time.

Subsequent layers on top refine the energy and movement of the work, honing the focus to small, confined areas within the work, just like memory with its keen, sharp detail for some specifics, whilst other parts are suggestive, the same way memory edits the reality and blurs the edges. The brush marks progressively become less raw, broad and emotive to considered, suggestive enhancement to underpin the mood of each piece.
